Dong Quai is a plant. People use the roots to make medicine.
Dong Quai is used for menstrual cramps, premenstrual syndrome (PMS) and symptoms of menopause. It is also used orally as a "blood purifier" to control hypertension, infertility, joint pain, ulcers, anemia and constipation, and for the prevention and treatment of allergy attacks. Dong Quai is also used for treating loss of skin color (pigmentation) and psoriasis.
Some men Dong Quai apply to the skin of the penis as part of a multi-ingredient preparation to prevent premature ejaculation.
It is used in Southeast Asia, sometimes replacing other species of Angelica Dong Quai (Angelica sinensis). Often these include Angelica acutiloba, which is found predominantly in Japan, and Angelica gigas, which is found mainly in Korea. Although these three species are similar, the chemicals they contain are different. Do not think that these species are interchangeable.
